Kyne Minnah had a headache and a deadline. It was already past midnight on a colony world at the far edge of Known Space, and he was staring down a few lines of code that wouldn't resolve and an angry message from a man who wanted the parade gravcars programmed by morning. Ordinary problems. The kind you can walk off.
So he walked, out into a cool, quiet night under a sky ablaze with white stars.

Except his neighbors were all standing in their yards, looking up. And the closer he got to town, the more of them there were, calling to each other, pointing.
He stopped and looked up too.

Stars. At least, they looked like stars at first. But these didn't twinkle, and they weren't white. They burned blue, and there were more every second, growing until they were the brightest things in the sky.

Then a needle of blue light came down from one of them, and the building three blocks over vaporized.

Kyne ran. But there was nowhere to go.
